Skipjack Inspired Sloop Rig Conversion 2017-2018

Gaff rig experiment induced a larger lateral force on the mast at gaff goose neck than I am comfortable with. So for 2018 I will be experimenting with a triangular mainsail.

Scarf (scarph) joint to extend mast 2018-2019
For 2018-2019 I will be extending the mast to 20ft using a cedar 8ft or 10ft 4x4 with a sraph lap of 4ft or 5ft.
The current main sail will be reused at the jib  and a new 16ft x16ft or 18ft x 18ft mainsail will be used.

17ft boom with 144sf main produces a cockpit head height just over 4ft.
16ft boom with 128sf mainproduces cockpit head height of approx 5'-6".
The extra 16sf sail area is not worth a crack on my skull and only represents an approx 12% increase.
With current 16ft mast main sail is 14ft x 14ft = 98sf the additional 30sf, approx 22% increase is worth the effort.

Furling headsail and shrouds installed.
On a cool June 2nd Saturday morning sail, the Kort modification performed well, and head sail provided for a gentle sail in extremely light winds (flags on shore were limp) against the last hour of an ebb tide.

But a baggy mainsail shape failed to fill even in the few errant gusts from low flying aircraft coming in to land (low enough to see the landing gear tire treads).

No camera this time.

So back to the drawing board?

Without spending much time  I will experiment with a loose footed main next.
